Where Hidden Cameras Actually Hide
A licensed Florida investigator who services camera systems explains where hidden cameras have to be placed, and why a scanner alone will not find them.

It is not investigative work. But it teaches you something no scanner can, which is where a camera has to go if it is going to see anything at all.
A camera is only useful if it can see
This sounds obvious and it is the whole game. A hidden camera has three hard constraints: it needs a sight line to whatever it is meant to record, it needs power or a battery someone has to change, and it needs to be somewhere nobody looks. Those three things narrow the possibilities far more than people expect.
Mount a camera badly and it records a ceiling. Mount it well and it is almost always in one of a dozen places. When you have spent days aiming cameras so they actually cover what they are supposed to cover, you stop searching a room at random and start searching the short list.
Where we look first inside a home
Anything with power already running to it. Outlets, power strips, chargers left plugged in, clock radios, lamps. Power is the constraint that kills most hidden cameras, so devices that solve it are the ones that last.
Anything high with a clear view. Smoke detectors, ceiling vents, light fixtures, the top of a bookshelf. Height buys sight line, which is why it is where a competent installer puts a real camera too.
Anything pointed at a bed, a desk, a doorway or a safe. Work backward from what someone would want to see rather than forward from where a device might fit.
Anything that appeared or moved. A new air freshener, a USB charger nobody remembers buying, a picture frame turned slightly. Clients often noticed the object weeks before they suspected anything, and dismissed it.
Why a scanner alone will not find it
Radio frequency detection finds cameras that transmit. Plenty of them do not. A device recording to an SD card broadcasts nothing at all, sits there for weeks, and gets collected later by whoever placed it. Sweep that room with a scanner and it reads clean.
That is why our sweeps combine electronic detection with a physical inspection done by hand: outlets opened, fixtures examined, furnishings checked, line of sight walked. The equipment finds the noisy devices. The hands find the quiet ones, and the quiet ones are the ones that matter.
What happens if we find something
We document it exactly where it sits before anything is touched. Photographed, located, preserved. In Florida, installing a surveillance or tracking device without consent can be a criminal matter, so a device found in your home or on your vehicle is potential evidence rather than trash.
Most people who find one themselves rip it out immediately, which is understandable and which destroys the strongest fact in their case. Once it is documented, what happens next is your decision: law enforcement, your attorney, or quiet removal.
What a sweep costs
Premises sweeps are $1.50 per square foot with a $500 minimum, so a 1,200 square foot home is $1,800. A single vehicle, compact through standard SUV, is a flat $500.
